Congress to Hold Hearing on Madoff Scandal
The video below discusses the steps that Congress is taking to get to the bottom of the Madoff scandal. Unfortunately we think that this will mean that there will be increased hedge fund regulation in the future.
New Hedge Fund Launches Expected to Increase
Even with the volitile markets and the negative media attention in the wake of the Madoff scandal, the hedge fund industry is poised to do well in 2009. At least in terms of hedge fund launches. New hedge funds are expected to increase in 2009 as out of work bankers and brokers decide to go into business. There are many resources available to new hedge fund managers and there are also good articles describing how to start a hedge fund on various websites. If you are starting a hedge fund in 2009 and need advice on service providers such as hedge fund attorneys, please let us know.
The Madoff scandal is still the most prevelant story discussing hedge funds. However, outside of Madoff there are many hedge fund stories which are not being covered like hedge fund regulation. One of the biggest stories of November 2008 was the testimony be hedge fund managers to Congress. This testimony was widely quoted from and actually showed a willingness by hedge fund managers to accept some level of regulation in the future. This video brings us back to those hearings and reminds us that the bigger story than Madoff for most hedge funds will be hedge fund regulation through registration.
The press and media have been all over hedge funds as the Madoff scandal has taken center stage. Still, many people do not currently know what exactly a hedge fund is and what purpose they serve in the financial system. The video below does a very good job of answering the question of “What is a hedge fund?”
